SIAS at the Fingal Community College and Navan

In these SIAS workshops, I got the chance to go to two proper public schools in Ireland, which I have never visited before.

The entrance of the Fingal school was modest, with the interior full of posters and drawings from the students. They were in many different languages, highlighting the multicultural nature of the school. The students were also multicultural, some of them being international students from Burgos, Spain (so I got to speak a little bit of Spanish). This was in major contrast with Blackrock, where students were mainly caucasian. Navan was exactly the same. However, the group size was extremely small, with around 7 students in the workshop.

Attending the iWish Public Engagement Event

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the iWish Public Engagement Event held at the RDS, with the help of Swapnil. This event is mainly focused on Transition Year students, in which several companies and colleges show their courses and try to recruit students. From the Chemistry School, we carried out an experiment with colour changing UV beads (the same experiment as the one carried out at the BT Youg Scientists).

Flash Talk at the Chemistry Career’s Day 2018

As an entry to the science dissemination world, yesterday I had the privilege (along with Adrián, Natalia and Marta) to do a flash talk at the Chemistry Career’s Day at the Stanley Quek lecture theatre in TBSI. The event was aimed at around 350 Leaving Cert Chemistry students (all girls), and also had the collaboration of external speakers from TCD, Henkel, Pfizer and Shire.

Teach, Learn and Research – Attending the MORSE Conference

The Methods of Research in Science Education (MORSE) is a one day conference aimed at providing useful and usable information to those working in education about the processes of ‘doing’ educational research, held on November 2 2018 at St Laurence’s Church in DIT Grangegorman. Attending this conference has provided me insight on the ways to approach teaching and educational research, and methods for the preparation and execution of teaching strategies.
